A cataract occurs when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. Cataracts can occur at any age. Some children are born with cataracts, and some children develop cataracts when they get a little older. Cataracts become more common as we become older. Sometimes, cataracts occur as the result of an injury.
In adults, cataracts usually do not need to be removed until the vision cannot be improved enough with glasses or contact lenses. The natural lens inside the eye is responsible for about one-third of the focusing of the light that enters the eyes. Therefore, most people who have cataracts removed have an intraocular lens implant placed in the eye at the same time the cataract is removed. Without an intraocular lens implant, a contact lens or very thick glasses would be needed for a person to be able to see following removal of the cataract.
Dr. Edelman and Dr. Shah utilize the most modern techniques for cataract removal. These techniques include small-incision cataract surgery using phacoemulsification (ultrasound), femtosecond laser (Alcon LenSx), and wavefront measurement technology (WaveTec ORA). In addition to high quality standard intraocular lenses, they also offer advanced technology intraocular lenses, including toric lenses that correct for astigmatism, Crystalens, ReStor and Tecnis Multifocal.
