Meet the Doctors
Dr. Edelman has been practicing ophthalmology in Castro Valley since 1982, and started Eye Specialties Medical Group in 1986. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. Edelman is experienced in comprehensive ophthalmology, and has extensive experience in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the eye and visual system. He has performed thousands of surgeries, including cataract, glaucoma, oculoplastic and refractive surgery.
Dr. Edelman is a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended Duke University for his undergraduate studies and received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. Dr. Edelman completed an internship in Internal Medicine in the Philadelphia area, and returned to Temple for his ophthalmology residency. He served as Chief Resident in his final year.
At Temple University, Dr. Edelman was given the opportunity to manage a wide variety of medical and surgical problems. While at Temple, Dr. Edelman gained valuable experience in microsurgery and treating trauma patients. The latter proved to be important at Eden Medical Center, which serves as southern Alameda County’s trauma center.
Dr. Edelman is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He is a council member at the Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association. In the past, Dr. Edelman has served as Chief of Surgery at Eden Hospital. He currently is Chief of Ophthalmology at Eden Medical Center.
Mark Lurie, M.D., Ph. D.
Dr. Mark Lurie was born and raised in South Africa. After immigrating to the United States, he attended college at Princeton University. After college, Dr. Lurie received a Ph.D. in visual neurophysiology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University, and began research at Stanford University. While continuing to do research, Dr. Lurie joined the Stanford Medical School class of 1982. After he received his medical doctor degree, Dr. Lurie stayed on at Stanford for an internship in pediatrics, and then a residency in ophthalmology.
Dr. Lurie is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He spent much of his career at The Permanente Medical Group in Fremont, California. While there, Dr. Lurie received a number of awards for outstanding patient care. Dr. Lurie is now happy to be working at Eye Specialties Medical Group. He enjoys evaluating patients for all medical and surgical conditions.
In his spare time, Dr. Lurie enjoys music and ceramics, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Neha N. Shah, M.D.
Dr. Shah is a native of California. For her undergraduate education, Dr. Shah attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she graduated with Honors. She completed medical school at the University of California, San Diego, where she was awarded a Regents Scholarship. While at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Shah spent a year doing research in glaucoma.
Dr. Shah completed her ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Following residency, Dr. Shah practiced in the Atlanta, Georgia area before returning to California.
Dr. Shah is a comprehensive ophthalmologist, specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of the eye and visual system, including state-of-the-art small-incision cataract surgery. Dr. Shah is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. A believer in the benefits of community service, Dr. Shah has volunteered at free clinics and also performed cataract surgery for the underserved in the Philippines.
In her free time, Dr. Shah enjoys painting, traveling, and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Dr. Sampson Fong, O.D.
Dr. Sampson Fong was raised in San Francisco. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition and Dietetics. Dr. Fong continued at Berkeley, graduating from the School of Optometry with a Doctor of Optometry degree in 1984.
When he is not helping people to see better, Dr. Fong enjoys skiing, basketball, tennis and traveling with his family.
Dr. Billie Z. Knight, O.D.
Dr. Knight received her Bachelor of Science degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972. She received her Doctor of Optometry degree from Berkeley in 1977.
Dr. Knight was an instructor of ocular anatomy and refraction technique at the University of Benin School of Optometry, Benin City, Nigeria, from 1982 to 1984. She returned to the United States in 1984, and served as a staff optometrist at Kaiser Permanente from 1984 to 2000. From 2000 through 2009, Dr. Knight was the Supervising Optometrist and Eye Department Manager at Kaiser Fremont. She was the coordinator for the Modified Clinical Technique School Screening program in Alameda and Contra Costa counties from 1995 through 1998. Since 2009, Dr. Knight has been a Clinical Instructor at the School of Optometry at the University of California at Berkeley. She joined Eye Specialties Medical Group in 2010.
Dr. Knight lives locally with her husband and their two dogs and two cats.
Meet Debbie, our Optician
We have reason to believe that Debbie may be the most experienced optician in the area. Debbie started in the optical business in 1972 with Mr. Ed Henninger. She earned her Licensed Registered Dispensing Optician (RDO) in 1977.
We were thrilled when Debbie joined Eye Specialties in 1995. Since then, she has built a loyal following. With just looking at you, Debbie is able to pick out a selection of eyeglass frames that are sure to complement your appearance. Not only will you look good in your new glasses, they will fit well. Debbie can also guide you in the proper selection of lenses, and if appropriate, coating and tints for the lenses. Even if you do not need glasses right now, stop in if your glasses are in need of adjustment or repair. Debbie or her assistant Terri will be happy to help you out!
Meet Teri, our Optician Assistant.
Teri has a broad range of experience with eyeglasses. She has worked in an optical lab, as an eyeglass frame sales representative, and as an optician assistant. With her extensive background, Teri has shown to be a valuable resource with frame selection and fitting.

We only share information with those entities that the patient has agreed to share of the information with, such as your health insurance company or provider, and other physicians or health care providers that you allow us to share information with.
